Take a country like India which has a population of 1.3 billion, many of whom are very poor. Lots of money was spent in preparing it's athletes for these games. They won just six medals - no gold among these. The bronze medalists were given cash handouts of $100,000 each. I'm not aware how much the two silver medalists got.
